  • Acuario (Peruvian)
163 North Main Street, Port Chester, NY
    (914) 931-2338
If you like ceviche, this a must-dine spot. Their overlarge sign "Cevicheria Y Mas" makes this clear. As might be expected with the name Acuario, Aquariums with pretty little fish are the restaurants main decorations. Not dressy, but certainly not your local dive. Even though there is a wide selection of Peruvian seafood and other entrees, we prefer to skip the entrees and order the generous sized Ceviche, followed by their good flan. We especially like the Pescado Ceviche. If you order an entre, try the Pescado Saltado. The Peruvian soft drinks must be an acquired taste.
Hours: Open every day, except Tuesday. Lunch, Noon - 4 PM, Dinner 5 PM - 9 PM, (Friday and Saturday until 11 PM)
Prices: Lunch: Soup, Salad and Entree, $8-$10; Dinner entrees, $10 to $20.

  • Bulldog Bar and Grill (American, Casual)
136 River Road Extension, Cos Cob CT
    422-2177
Ron Rosa, owner of Polpo Restaurant, has opened a casual, saloon-style family restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Augie’s. This is his second Bulldog, with 3 more planned for Fairfield County. Bulldog serves burgers, salads, sandwiches and some entrees such as salmon, lasagne and southern fried chicken. If you aren’t having a Saloon Sandwich or a burger, Lasagna is an excellent choice.

    Prices: Salads, Sandwiches & Burgers, $10-$15; Dinner Entrees, $14-$23; Under 10 Children’s Menu, $8.

  • Mark Mariani's Garden Center and Cafe (American, Casual)
    45 Bedford Road, Armonk NY
    (914) 273-3083
This stylish greenhouse garden center with rare trees, shrubs, and decorative pottery for sale has a cafe open for breakfast and lunch. I loved my fresh fig salad and lemonade and I can't wait to return.
Hours: The cafe is open 7 days a week from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
    Prices: Breakfast $6.50 - $9.50; Lunch $9.50 - $16.50

  • Napa & Company (American, New)
    75 Broad Street, Stamford
    353-3319
Located in the Courtyard by Marriott hotel, Napa & Company is off to a good start. They know that dining out should not only be good food, but fun too. When we saw the menu, we soon realized this was a tasting party. All kinds of wines by the glass, 25 different cheeses, interesting small plate servings and a short list of unusual main course entrees. Whimsical descriptions of the wines and cheeses, for instance (assertive tangy with barnyard aroma), made choosing fun. Our waiter knew his wine and cheese, and gave us very good recommendations. In fact, we all liked everything we tried. The menu changes often to allow the use of local seasonal organic produce. The ambiance is chic modern, with bottle lined walls. The bar crowd became increasingly noisy throughout the evening, and even though the tables are nicely spaced, conversation became challenging. The dining room is called The Kitchen. An adjoining shop, called the Pantry, is a gourmet grocery.
    Prices: Lunch entrees, $15- $30; Dinner entrees, $26 - $39, with a Napa Wagyu (kobe-style beef) Burger for $18.
    Hours: Breakfast, daily 6:30 am - 10am; Lunch, Sunday - Friday, 11:30 am - 2:30 pm (Sunday Brunch 11 am to 4 pm); Dinner, Monday - Saturday, 5:30 - 10 pm.

  • Nicholas Roberts Fine Foods (American, New)
    75 Main Street, Norwalk, CT
    (203) 838-5823
We wish this restaurant were closer. We like chef-owner Robert Troilo’s good food, as well as his concept of keeping his restaurant costs down so he can pass on savings to his customers. Unfortunately, this also means they do not accept credit cards. The pleasant, minimally decorated, informal backboard lined dining room can seat 22 people. The restaurant is about good food and friendly service. The chef will probably ask if you liked what he prepared. They do no have a liquor license. Bring your own wine, if you don’t mind their $5 corkage fee. The menu may change with the seasons, but if they offer two soups in a bowl (butternut squash and asparagus), be sure to order it. We also like their Swiss chard wrapped monk fish.
    Hours: Lunch, Monday - Friday, 11 AM - 3 PM; Brunch Saturday & Sunday, 10 AM - 3 PM; Dinner, Wednesday-Saturday, 7 AM - 9 PM.
    Prices: Lunch entrees, $7 - $12; Dinner entrees, $15 - $20.
